Farm To Food Truck Challenge

If you weren’t in love with food trucks before, you certainly will be now!  Orange County’s first “Farm To Food Truck” Challenge held recently at the SoCo Certified Farmer’s Market at SoCo Collection in Costa Mesa was a huge success.  The Challenge featured 10 Food Truck chefs creating signature dishes created from farmer’s market ingredients and the protein of their choice.

Food Truck challengers included:  Chomp Chomp, Spud Runners, Dos Chinos, BaconMania, Piaggio Piaggio, Adobo Express, SlapFish, Flip Truck, Bakery Truck, and the Lime Truck.

Tasty dishes included:

*Skirt Steak with Roasted Fresh Market Vegetables and Bacon Wrapped Asparagus from Piaggio Piaggio

*Vietnamese Rib Eye Steak Salad with Fram Fresh Vegetables and Citrus Fish Sauce from Dos Chinos

*Duo Filet Coffee Crusted Filet Mignon Slider of Filet Mignon carpaccio, crispy blood orange from Flip Truck

*Baja Lobster Grilled Cheese with Lime Cilantro Corn on the Cob served with Organic Blueberry Lemonade by Spudrunners

*Crab Benedict with Citrus Calamansi with potato, red bell pepper topped with quail eggs from Chomp Chomp

The winning dish from BaconMania was a delicious combination of Red Leaf Lettuce, flash fried spinach, beef steak tomatoes, Haas avocados, glazed orange blossom honey, bacon fat toasted almonds, white truffle vinaigrette with a sprinkle of bee pollen and of course, a bit of bacon.

The judges were truly in for a treat to judge this inaugural competition:   Sukhraj Beasla, Anita Lau, Greer Wylder, Marion Bacol Uba, Hamilton Le

 

The Farm to Food Truck Challenge was not the only reason to come out to the So Co Farmer’s Market that weekend.  Rolling Sushi provided sushi favorites of the Tiger and the Dragon, LobstaTruck, Crepes Bonaparte, Barcelona On The Go, Rancho A Go Go BBQ sold out of Moink Balls which are beef meatballs wrapped in bacon.  Also on hand were the Bee Ladies of La Habre Heights with local honey from hives they started nearly 10 years ago from one hive, Sweet Tree Farms from Dinuba, CA which is  a family farm with gorgeous produce like pluots, donut peaches…. a family owned farm since 2002, Nicholas Family Farms, Hopkins AG features incredibly tasty almonds of lime and sea salt, chili lemon, rosemary sea salt, and maple syrup orange.  Set at the SoCo collection in Costa Mesa, this certified farmer’s market is held every Saturday from 9am-2pm, features a variety of fruit and vegetable vendors along with a rotation of gourmet food trucks.
