What is a healthy gut? The gut equals the digestive system. Both good and “bad” bacteria are contained in the digestive tract. A healthy digestive system equals a healthier you!

A few signs your diet may need to be balanced:

  • Acid reflux
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Ulcers
  • Bloating
  • Bowel inconsistencies

Specific foods and those to avoid can provide simple solutions. Here are a few foods known to help balance the body’s gut health:

Simple, Common Gut Healing Foods

    • Ginger root
      • has proven benefits to prevent nausea including motion sickness
      • helps increase the metabolism which improves bowel movements
      • Add fresh ginger root to easy vinaigrettes, soups, dishes that include marinades and sauces such as Maple Ginger Salmon
    • Garlic
      • this natural immune booster also helps balance the gut
      • a known anti-bacterial, garlic also helps increase the good bacteria in the gut
      • Add fresh garlic to all kinds of recipes! Salad dressings, any sauteed dish such as vegetables, shrimp, and chicken. Of course the classic recipes with garlic include Spaghetti and Meatballs and Beef with Marsala Mushroom sauce.

    • Fermented Foods
      • pretty much any fermented food is good for gut health by helping to balance the good bacteria with the not-so-good bacteria
      • Some of my favorite fermented foods: kefir, sauerkraut, and tempeh

  • Cabbage Juice
    • known to help prevent and heal ulcers
    • supports a healthy liver
    • helps prevent against cancer
    • blend cabbage in the blender, strain and reserve the cabbage juice. Use blended cabbage to make coleslaw, then drink the juice. Use the juice to sautee foods, add to soups, and as a replacement for water in slow roasted recipes.
  • Chia, Flax, and Hemp Seeds
    • high in omega-3s
    • high in fiber which improves digestive flow
    • improves overall blood flow
    • easy to incorporate into any dish. sprinkle a few of these seeds on eggs, avocado, whisk into vinaigrettes, add to smoothies, and a must-have ingredient for homemade protein balls.
